Infant Feeding Equipment: Supporting Healthy Nourishment

A mother’s journey is a rollercoaster experience. Whether they’ve just made the change from maiden to mother or they have done it all before, no two births are the same.

One of the challenges that many mothers face is providing their babies with the proper nourishment. The whirlpool of information regarding what’s right and wrong, as well as the pressure many mothers face from society’s expectations, can lead to a great deal of confusion, stress and guilt.

While breast milk is the best source of nutrition for babies, it’s not always possible for a mother to feed normally. This can be for a variety of reasons — some medical, sharing the love/taking a break, returning to work or needing a helping hand to produce milk.

Some mother’s worry that choosing bottle-feeding over breastfeeding will impact their bonding. However, if a mother does choose to express her milk and provide it to her baby in a bottle, the Australian Breastfeeding Association reassures mothers that they can continue to bond with their baby. For example, with lots of skin-to-skin contact while feeding or while cuddling.

That’s where Infant Feeding Equipment comes in. It provides assistance to mothers who want to do the best for their babies, no matter what the circumstances are. Midmed takes these issues very seriously, offering a range of solutions that have been clinically tested and are trusted.

Midmed has a wide range of products to support mothers feeding their newborn babies. From specialised devices for breast pumping comfortably to fluid warmers that prepare milk for consumption, plus a host of other accessories such as storage bags, teats and baby bottles.

Finding Infant Feeding Equipment

It can be difficult to find infant feeding equipment that doesn’t take up too much space, is durable and reliable. We recently discussed the role breast pumps can play in Supporting A Mother’s Journey, touching on common reasons for using a breast pump and the quality of the Ameda brand. It’s a convenient, flexible and simple way of continuing to provide babies with the mother’s natural milk when other barriers are in place. But there’s more equipment needed to feed babies than just a breast pump.

Other basic equipment like baby bottles, teats, storage bags/bottles and fluid warmers.

Baby bottles are a handy way of storing expressed milk. Our Materni bottles are safe to use with the microwave, dishwasher, freezer and bottle warmer making them highly versatile. The screw-top allows teats to easily be attached and volume markings make it easy to keep track of how much milk your baby is consuming. Cleaning and sterilising can easily be done with warm soapy water to stop the risk of infection.

Warming up breast milk is not required but does helps improve consistency if it’s been refrigerated. When breast milk has been frozen or refrigerated, the fat tends to separate in the bottle. So bringing it back to room temperature or lukewarm can help mix it back to its original consistency.

Ultimately, the journey of motherhood is a winding one and there are many changes to be made along the way. As the stigma and science regarding nourishment evolve, so will feeding equipment. When it comes down to it, the most important thing is to help ensure newborns are satisfied nutritionally as that will help them grow and develop into healthy children.
